The Sandwich Board Experiment
In a study, students were asked to walk around campus wearing a sign that said "Eat at Joe's."
- Those who agreed to wear it estimated that 62% of others would also agree.
- Those who refused estimated that 67% of others would also refuse.
Both sides thought they were the majority. This is the False Consensus Effect.
The Bubble
We surround ourselves with friends who adhere to our views. Algorithmic feeds show us content we like. We live in a bubble where "everyone" seems to agree with us. The next time you are shocked that someone disagrees with you, remember: You are not the standard for "normal." The world is far more diverse than your circle.
