The Paradox of Osiris: Wisdom of Death and Rebirth in Egyptian Mythology
Osiris, whose fragmented body was gathered once more to become the King of Eternal Life. We embark on a psychological journey to learn how loss is never an end, but a new beginning, in one of ancient Egypt's greatest myths.
The Paradox of Osiris: That Which Can Only Live by Dying
For the ancient Egyptians, Osiris was the most respected god and the great king of the dead. His myth is not merely a legend from the distant past, but a powerful metaphor explaining the collapse and recovery of our lives and 'psychological alchemy.'
I. Envy and Dismantling: The Fragmented Ego
Osiris was a great king who taught civilization and agriculture on earth. However, he met a tragic death due to the envy of his brother Set, the god of destruction. Set cut Osiris's body into 14 pieces and scattered them across Egypt.
This 'fragmentation' symbolizes the crisis of our lives.
- When we lose a loved one,
- When a career to which we've devoted our entire life collapses,
- When the values we believed in are shattered,
We experience the pain of being scattered and dismantled like Osiris. This is the process Carl Jung called 'Solutio' (Dissolution), an inevitable stage where the old ego must die for a new personality.
II. Isis's Devotion: The Power to Gather What is Invisible
Osiris's wife Isis did not give up. She wandered all over Egypt, finding and gathering her husband's fragmented body pieces one by one. This 'gathering act' of hers is not just a restoration. It is the 'healing process' of meticulously caring for and integrating the fragments of a wounded heart.
Isis resurrects Osiris with her magical power, but instead of returning to earth, he becomes the King of the Underworld (Duat). This means that a human being, after experiencing pain, does not return to the previous state, but transforms into a being of a much deeper and higher dimension than before.
III. The Birth of Horus: Hope for a New Era
Horus, born between the resurrected Osiris and Isis, avenges his father and becomes the new king. The 'Eye of Horus' symbolizes 'healing' and 'wholeness.'
This symbolizes that after going through trial (the death of Osiris) and healing (the devotion of Isis), a new 'insight (Horus)' is finally born within us. We gain a wider vision than before experiencing pain, and acquire the ability to see both the world's darkness and light at the same time.
Conclusion: In Search of Your Fragments
What period are you passing through now? Is your heart fragmented by Set's attack, or are you gathering those pieces like Isis?
Remember, according to the wisdom of ancient Egypt, without Fragmentation, there is no true Regeneration. The pieces that have given you pain have not disappeared. They are merely preparing to be reassembled into a firmer and wiser form within Isis's love.
The Osiris sleeping within you will soon rise again as the king of the underworld and the master of life.
